The project From Modernism to the Avant-garde continues the propounder's present research (cf. D. Kšicová, Art Nouveau. Word and Image, 1998). The goal: a genologically conceived monography, incorporating individual components of modernism (esp. symbolism) into the genealogy extending from romantism and realism up to neoclassicist akmeism and other phases of Russian modernism - futurism, cubistic futurism, primitivism and others. The clue to deciphering the complex system of signs of the individual phases of development and their transformation will be the study of their philosophical sources, as well as interdisciplinary comparison of various types of art. The relation between modernism and the avant-garde will be investigated both in the younger symbolists' work (e.g. the change of Bely's poetics in the 1920s), and in the work of the representatives of the avant-garde (A. Akhmatova, V. Khlebnikov, M. Tsvetaeva, O. Mandelshtam) in comparison with analogical phenomena in paiting.
