Description | The prevalence of obesity has been rapidly increasing worldwide. In many studies, this trend has been associated with lifestyle changes of modern society. Along with increased energy intake and reduced energy output, the length and quality of sleep has been investigated as a potential risk factor associated with obesity-related characteristics. Approximately 10-20% of population suffer from sleep disorders and the average length of sleep has been in the last 50 years reduced on average by 1.5-2 hours per night. Numerous epidemiological studies has confirmed the relationship between the insufficient sleep duration and increased BMI. The laboratory studies report impaired glucose metabolism and disturbances in regulation of food intake (mediated with leptin and ghrelin) in sleep disorders. Generally, duration and quality of sleep should therefore be considered a novel risk factor for obesity development. |
