Description The paper describes the formation of the educational function of museum and the beginnings of museum pedagogy as theory and practice of education in, through and for museum. It deals with the development of activities in museum education since the second half of 18th century and the establishment of museum pedagogy as a science in the second half of 20th century. Present museum pedagogy is an interdisciplinary field based primarily on museological, pedagogical, psychological and communication theoretical starting points and is characterised by systematic research, publishing of theoretical and research texts and establishment of the field in scientifically institutions as well as tertiary education. Museum pedagogy reacts to current challenges of the society, enhances the quality of life of its members and performs one of the crucial functions of modern museum as an irreplaceable institution of lifelong learning and especially nonformal and informal education. In the conclusion the paper discusses the basic conceptions and development of education in museum pedagogy which reacts to the insufficient number of qualified museum educators in Czech museums. The final part of the text describes institutional and practical development of museum education in Czech museums and outlines several possibilities of quality improvement and professionalization of activities in museum education.
