Description | This paper discusses the results of a survey that examined the reading skills of faculties of Education's students. The survey was carried out at faculties of Education in Brno and Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. First year students are asked (in a questionnaire) what reading strategies they use in their studying, how they learn from written texts and what reading and learning strategies were encouraged in their previous school years. We assume that a teacher is only able to transfer those skills that he/she knows him/herself. Czech pupils achieved average scores in these areas in the PISA and PIRLS projects. We therefore assume that working with texts is far from ideal in Czech schools. Future teachers can change this provided that they have met with new approaches to reading and reading literacy in the course of their university studies. |
