This project focuses on the topic of the W-B-C protective coatings, which have the potential to replace the state-of-the-art hard protective coatings due to their unprecedented combination of high hardness and increased fracture resistance. The project has two major objectives, to develop a characterization method to evaluate the fracture resistance of the coatings and to model the sputtering process to develop a tool for target design and explain the inherent formation of multilayered coatings.
