The aim of the project is the publication of the first volume of the planned four-volume monograph
"Vegetation of the Czech Republic 1. Grassland and Heathland Vegetation" in Academia Publishers (Prague). The manuscript of this book was prepared by a team of researchers from Masaryk University in Brno and Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, with funding from the previous project of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic no. 206/02/0957. The monograph is based on a numerical analysis of a large vegetation-plot database, which was used for creating an expert system for automatic identification of vegetation units. The first volume includes 108 associations of grassland and heathland vegetation, which are documented by a textual description in Czech with English summaries, synoptic tables of species composition, distribution maps, photos of stands and various graphs. The associations are placed within a hierarchical system of alliances and classes. With this publication, the Czech Republic will receive a modern and detailed reference book on vegetation and habitat types, comparable with the high standards set up in the similar monographs on the vegetation of Great Britain, the Netherlands and Mecklenburg. It will be a source of basic information for researchers and practitioners in the fields of nature conservation, forestry, agriculture, botany, ecology and students of natural and agricultural sciences.
