Citation
Description This chapter introduces development of leisure time acitivities during period of adolescence a presents results from longitudinal study ELSPAC. The range of duties or mandatory activities for adolescents is narrowing. There are less household chores; participation in family economic activities (part-time jobs) is minimal in middle adolescence. Thanks to the new media (esp. the Internet) providing a lot of information and activities the boundary between fun and education becomes less clear. An increase in leisure activities provides more space for adolescent decision-making. Parents’ role in the planning of leisure time is declining as does the monitoring of leisure activities by parents. Adolescents themselves determine how they want to use their free time, what activities they want to participate in. As the longitudinal results show the number of children’s regular activities decreases with age, older adolescents have already more or less delegated to parental responsibility only matters related to their vocational choice and material provision, whilst leisure activities, choice of friends and life styles is up to the adolescents themselves.
