Description The expression system of the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris is widely used to produce diverse heterologous proteins for research and industry. P. pastoris can express both intracellular and extracellular proteins at high levels. It can be easily genetically manipulated. Unlike bacteria, yeast can perform many posttranslational protein modifications. These reasons make P. pastoris a suitable system for protein expression. We have optimized the production of recombinant cryptogein in fermenter cultures of P. pastoris. Cryptogein is a small basic protein secreted by pathogenic oomycete Phytophtora cryptogea. It is used to study plant defense reaction. We are able to produce 50-70 mg of this protein during one week fermentation. This work was supported by Grant agency of the Czech Republic (P501/11/1003).
