| Description | The pumpkinseed sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus, a centrarchid fish native in Eastern North America, was introduced to the Europe at the end of the 19th century as an aquarium and garden pond fish. At the present the pumpkinseed is one of the most successfully introduced fish species widely spread in many European countries and occurs in a variety types of aquatic habitats. In the present study, the monogenean parasite communities of 6 populations of L. gibbosus were sampled in Europe (France, Croatia, Bulgaria, Czech and Slovak Republic). Altogether 9 monogenean parasite species were recorded. Gyrodactylus vimbi and G. laevis/prostae, both generalist parasites, represent a new species of L. gibbosus. Seven species (Onchocleidus similis, O. dispar, O. acer, Actinocleidus recurvatus, A. oculatus, Cleidodiscus robustus, G. macrochiri) belong to imported monogenean species. |
