Description | This study examined the relation between type of activity and private speech in preschool children. Twenty children (4- and 5-years old) were observed during closed-ended activity (construction of a puppet according to models) and open-ended activity (free play with the puppet). It was found that children used more private speech during open-ended than closed-ended activity. This is consistent with the Vygotskian perspective that open-ended activity provides a fruitful context for the development of self-regulation. Moreover, it was found that children used private speech in a different manner during open-ended and closed-ended activity. Open-ended activity was connected with higher production of fantasy play speech whereas closed-ended activity was associated with higher production of private speech describing one's own activity and self guidance. The implications of finding that closed-ended activity and open-ended activity play a different, but equally important, role in the development of self-regulation were considered. |
