Description Currently, the completed PhD-thesis is devoted to the floristic, taxonomic and autecological studies of cyanobacteria and microalgae causing the biodeterioration of monuments in W Slovakia (Bratislava), and in SE Spain (Murcia). Subaerial taxa of cyanobacteria and microlagae studied here belong to taxonomically difficult groups, firstly because of the complex patterns of morphological variation and not well-known distributions in Europe and secondly because of a difficult delimitation and exact definition. Therefore, they are usually classified on the basis of habitat. The PhD-thesis main topics include the investigation and distribution of representatives, their taxonomic, autecological status, and their ecological relationships with stone substrata of subaerial habitats, e.g., semiarid, arid and hostile environments, urban extreme habitats. Several authors have focused on the distribution of algal species in urban habitats mainly from monuments of Southern Europe (Italy, Greece). Generally, the urban habitat, especially subaerial habitats in urban areas, seem to be the most neglected research from the point of view of the phycologist. Therefore, the gathered material and information presenting in this thesis took advantage of the considerable amount of data for the knowledge and understanding of these microorganisms using various methods. I summarized general results and concepts of subaerial taxa obtained in previous studies in Chapter 1. I specified the main aims in Chapter 2, used material and methods in Chapter 3, selected the general results for all studies in Chapter 4, and presented separately specific studies in Chapter 5, which are already partially published, accepted, submitted or prepared as manuscripts for publication.
