Description Deep brain stimulation is based on the principle of stimulation of respective brain areas through brain-implanted electrodes connected with the stimulator which generates electric voltage pulses. For many years now the deep brain stimulation has been used in the treatment of Parkinson disease and new indications appear to be pharmaco-resistant depressions. However, no double-blind study has been carried out so far to verify effectiveness of deep brain stimulation in the treatment of acute depression. Deep brain stimulation may represent a treatment alternative for patients with pharmaco-resistant depression where existing treatment procedures including other neuro-stimulation methods have so far failed. However, at the moment it is an entirely experimental method whose efficacy and safety need to be verified in studies with a larger number of patients.
