Description Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a well established method for peptide and protein molecular weight determination routinely applied mostly in proteomic research. Due to its recently described capability to provide reproducible fingerprint spectra of whole bacterial cells or extracts, the method is now increasing its share also in the field of bacteria identification and taxonomy. The unique advantages of the method concern above all its rapidity and discriminatory power. The aim of this work was to examine the robustness and discriminatory power of MALDI-TOF MS profiling on a large set of lactic acid bacteria isolated from diverse sources.
