Description An essential component of health culture of the 21st century is health literacy. Health literacy is the capacity to make sound health decisions in the context of everyday life: at home, in the community, at the workplace, in the health care system, the marketplace, and the political arena. Education has been an essential component of action to promote health, prevent diseases and participate in health care. Health education is directed towards improving health literacy. Development of health literacy is a part of good public health policy. Health policy is characterized by an explicit concern for health and equity in all areas of policy and by accountability for health impact. Health literacy should take into account social determinants of health which determine life style choice, behaviour and have crucial influence on health.
