Description This paper describes a platform enabling the visually impaired people to access computer graphics in a form that is especially suitable for e-learning due to its universality and capability to couple graphical objects with ontologies and knowledge databases. This platform enhances the efficiency of the annotation process and links graphical objects to relevant explanations. The paper also presents a brief outline of the GATE (= Graphics Accessible to Everyone) project architecture and discusses some problems and approaches associated with the detection and annotation of graphical objects in both vector and raster images. Knowledge driven annotation is introduced and proposed for the annotation of graphical objects in e-learning. Some examples and illustrations are presented as well.
