Description Plants, unlike animals, feature developmental plasticity, which is reflected in plant-specific, postembryonic organogenesis, driven by gene-regulated developmental programs. Two basic plant growth regulators, cytokinin (CK) and auxin, were found to be the principal regulators of those processes. CK has been suggested to act as auxin antagonist in the root development. Here we demonstrate that endogenous CK i) negatively regulates quantitative parameters of maturing primary root (PR) meristems and ii) impairs auxin concentration gradients in developing lateral root primordia and their morphogenesis. We further specify iii) a developmental window during early PR development that reveals higher sensitivity to the increased levels of endogenous CK.
