Description 37 first-episode schizophrenia patients underwent structured neurological assessment of neurological soft signs. Based on the results of the neurological assessment patients were devided into two groups - with/without neurological abnormalities. Basal ganglia morphology in these two groups was contrasted and compared with healthy controls. Patients with movement sequencing abnormalities had different morphology when compared with patients without such symptoms and no differences were found between the symptomatic group and healthy controls. The resulst suggests the importance of the basal ganglia for the primary pathology of schizophrenia. Exact interpretation must be made in the context of the knowledge of histopathological correlates of such findings.
