Description The Javoříčko and Mladeč karstic areas rank among the most important and long-term monitored bat hibernacula in the Czech Republic. The study made in 2001–2005 was focused on the occurrence of bats at cave entrances and at foraging sites outside the hi ber na ti on period, as revealed by mist nets and bat detectors. In total, we netted 15 bat species (by decreasing do mi nan ce – Myotis emar gi na tus, Barbastella barbastellus, Myotis myotis, M. bechsteinii, M. dau ben to nii, M. nattereri, Rhi no lo phus hipposideros, Plecotus auritus, Ep te si cus serotinus, Myotis mys ta ci nus, Eptesicus nillsonii, Nycta lus noctula, Myotis brandtii, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, and Plecotus austriacus). The lowest fl ight activity was recorded from mid April to the end of June and the highest one from the end of August to the fi rst half of September. The highest mean level of activity was found in the caves of Zátvořice and Švecova díra, which are the main entrances to the Javoříčko cave system. The numbers of Myotis bech s tei nii and Barbastella barbastellus found outside the hibernation period were the highest recorded so far in the Czech Republic. The two karstic areas are important bat sites at the Eu ro pean level. The Javoříčko cave system and the Špraněk National Nature Reserve have been in clu ded in the national list of Special Areas of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network.
