Description BP measurement using 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (SpaceLabs 90207) according to the ESH criteria. We evaluated 60 patients in two groups before and after the 3months of treatment with 20mg betaxolol hydrochloride or 200mg slow-release metoprolole. The smoothness index was obtained by calculating the average BP values for each hour of the 24-hour monitoring period, both before and during treatment. From these, all hourly changes in BP induced by treatment were obtained, and the average of these hourly values was divided by its standard deviation. Results: SI of metoprolole was for systolic BP 1,25 +- 0,88 SD, [95% CI, 0,35 to 1,55] and for diastolic BP 1,43 +- 1,14 SD, [95% CI, 1,02 to 1,84]. SI of betaxolole hydrochloride was for systolic BP 1,00 +- 0,65 SD, [95% CI, 0,77 to 1,23] and for diastolic BP 1,19 +- 0,92 SD, [95% CI, 0,86 to 1,52]. 95% CI = 95% confidence interval. Man Whitney U test comparison of SI of both drugs was for systolic BP, P = 0,2728, for diastolic BP, P = 0,4317. Conclusion: Both drugs had SI equal or higher than 1, reflecting a homogeneous effect throughout 24-hour. No statistically significant differences in SI were observed between treatments.
