Description Historical aspects of development and progress of railway transportation within the area of Czech Republic brings on light some interesting facts. These facts could be put together as a spatio-temporal mosaic that leads as far as the contemporary state is. It is worth making a look back to make a regressive comparison. Historical retrospective is particularly useful for evaluating the impact of railway on either progression or retrogression of regions. During the time were naturally preferred the most frequented lines and centrums connected by them grew in population and acquired bigger economical and administrative importance. Quantitative and qualitative growth of centrums invoked feedback in form of modernization and further preferring of these lines. Final result of such preferences is increase of differences between regions positioned on preferred lines (cities, metropolitan areas) and the others. Nevertheless during 20th century the role of railway transportation decreased in its importance from both economical and social point of view. At the turn of 21st century become the situation of railway transportation in Czech Republic even more complicated. A complete transformation and huge reduction is an up to date issue. Necessity of cutting down some railroad lines involves primarily less frequented lines along with less economically profitable regional and local lines. Would it be possible at all to save these lines from operational shutting down or even from complete liquidation?
