Description Quantitative comparative research of the new political systems obviously adopts methods and indicators, which were used for the traditional democracies. These methods and indicators can be found deficient in confrontation with the specific reality of new democracies. The concept of volatility, which indicates the level of stability of the party systems, cant sufficiently distinguish the instability caused by changes in the voters demands and instability caused by changes in the supply of parties. This article deals with the specific indicator, party replacement, which indicates only the supply caused instability. There is introduced new formula for counting the party replacement and conversions of the classical volatility formula worked up by Sarah Birch. Some advantages and problems of Birchs adaptations and their potential development in the quantitative research in the Czech Republic are also shortly discussed.
