Keywords gene polymorphism asthma MnSOD superoxide dismutase
Description We investigated the possible association between functional variant Ala-9Val in the MnSOD gene and asthma in the case-control study comprising 626 Caucasian subjects. MnSOD genotypes were determined by PCR with subsequent restriction analysis by BsaWI enzyme. Significant differences in allele frequencies between groups were not ascertained. Pursuant theses results, Ala-9Val polymorphism does not seem to be a significant predisposing factor for the bronchial asthma in the Czech population. All the same, indications that polymorphism in the MnSOD might modulate severity of disease in predisposed subjects certainly deserve additional attention and exploration.
