Description | Cognitive impairment is common in many neuropsychiatric illnesses but most in dementia, schizophrenia and depression. The cognitive dysfunction has several components, the memory impairment is one of the most important. In individual disorders the course and treatment responsivenness of memory impairment is different. Current treatments of cognitive impairment include atypical antipsychotics(mostly studied in schizophrenia),serotonin receptor drugs, cholinergic(especially in dementia), noradrenergic and glutamatregic drugs. In clinical practice some others, not evidence based treatments are used, for example antioxidants, nootropic, vasodilatans. The so-called cognitive enhancers seem to be promising. Out of nonpharmacological approaches the transcranial magnetic stimulation seems to be hopeful. Studying common features and differences of cognitive impairment in individual illnesses may contribute to the better undrestanding of pathogenesis and treatment. |
