The impact of inundation on floodplain forest Brachycera (Diptera) associated with oak logs

Description In 1996 and 1997, Brachycera (Diptera) associated with lying oak trunks were studied by means of emergence traps on two hardwood floodplain forest sites in South Moravia, Czech Republic. While the first site has not been inundated since 1972, the second site has a continuous history of flood exposure (incl. a summer flood in 1997). 7933 adults of 32 families were trapped. 194 species were identified (excl. 5609 individuals of the genera Megaselia and Phora not identified to species). 162 species were considered obligate, facultative or potential saproxylics, making up for 90 % of all individuals identified. Zoophagous and saprophagous species were dominant. The community on the site not exposed to floods had a higher diversity and evenness than that of the flood-exposed site. Their similarity was rather low. Data interpretation was complicated by lacking information on the ecology of many species and insufficient integrity of emergence traps.
