Description Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for all diseases in the developed world, and in recent years, the problem has also been increasing in developing countries. Cardiovascular diseases include diseases of the heart and blood vessels (mainly ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and ischaemic disease of the lower limbs) and are classified as non-communicable diseases of mass incidence ('diseases of civilisation'). Cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR), with its rehabilitation training programmes, education on appropriate physical activities and counselling on secondary and tertiary prevention, is the most effective means of positively influencing the prognosis of cardiovascular disease (reduction of morbidity and mortality), the quality of life of patients and thus improving their independence and promoting social integration. The prescription of rational and individually selected training activities under professional supervision forms a central component of the CR. It can significantly benefit patients after acute myocardial infarction, after percutaneous coronary intervention, after cardiac surgery (CABG, heart valve surgery, heart transplantation) and, last but not least, patients with chronic heart failure.
