Description This article reports on research into the relationship between syntactic and lexical complexity, the aim being to discover whether the presence of one measure correlates with the presence of another. 100 argumentative essays written by L1-Czech L2-English students were analysed using the LSA and L2SCA. The results indicate that use of complex nominals and clause length, both features of syntactic complexity, have a strong positive correlation with lexical complexity measures.
