| Description | The present paper will discuss the socio-cultural situation associated with architectural structures called exedras. The focus will be placed on aspects intertwining social, honorific and presentational contexts. The first is the presentation of influential individuals and their family members through bronze or stone statues and the dedication inscriptions found directly on the exedrae. Firstly the presentation will briefly aim on the forms and methods of financing and construction of the the sculptures associated with exedrae focusing on individuals who were directly associated with them. Secondly, the display of votive objects on the exedra placed on sacred precincts during annual festivals dedicated to selected deities, especially deities associated with healing such as Asclepius and Apollo. Chronologically, the work will be framed by the Hellenistic and the Roman period. Topographically, the examples will be selected from the eastern Mediterranean area. |
