Description The archaeological excavations of Iron Age sites almost exclusively focus on the originally built-up areas and construction of the buildings. ‘Empty spaces’ within the settlements were not devoid of functions and they represent (not only in urban centres) deliberately not built up areas, maintained as such for a prolonged period of time. The paper investigates the phenomenon of unbuilt areas within the Iron Age sites during the Late Hallstatt and La Tene periods, showing that there are regular patterns observable in the approach of communities to the creation (and maintenace) of unbuilt areas within the settlement. It also considers the possibilities of multidisciplinary approach for the examination of such empty spaces.
