Description | In my contribution, I looked at the evolution of crime fiction as a genre and discussed its involvement in the cultural and societal developments throughout the last three centuries, with special focus on the portrayal of gender. I have argued that despite its reputation as a formulaic and escapist genre, crime fiction has, since its beginnings up to the present day, not only reacted to the circumstances of its era, but has frequently actively engaged in the contemporary socio-cultural discussions, in which individual and communal identity oftentimes stood central. |
