Description Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous serious mental illness, which is characterized by significant impairment of mental functions. Antipsychotics are the basis of therapy. Their role in medication is currently irreplaceable, as their continuous use enables the long-term suppression of schizophrenia symptoms and the prevention of multiple hospitalizations of patients in the event of a relapse of the disease. Lack of insight into the disease in the diagnosis, impaired cognitive functions or adverse effects of antipsychotics, together with other factors, lead to patients' non-adherence to treatment, which thus becomes a key problem of long-term maintenance therapy. Long-acting injectable antipsychotics have been developed to reduce relapse in patients who are unable to ensure adherence to the oral form of prescribed medications. Depot dosage forms in psychopharmacology are gaining importance and are more effective than conventional p.o. dosage forms. The main advantages of depot psychotropic drugs include improved adherence to treatment, avoidance of the first-pass effect and problems associated with absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, and the absence of the risk of accidental or intentional overdose. The development of depot dosage forms is currently focused on the study of microparticles. Administering long-acting injectable antipsychotics in the ambulatory setting is permitted on the basis of fulfilling the prescription conditions, which result from the decision of the regulatory authority, and must be followed. Prescription conditions currently allow this specific dosage form to be administered to a relatively narrow group of patients.
