Description | Research of manuscript fragments in the Slovak National Library has shown that a large part of them is used as covers for old prints. The study examines the features of such parchment bindings, categorizes them and reveals the signs of several bookbinding workshops. The study examined incunables, 16th-century books from the Franciscan libraries and the main collection. The libraries of Zai, Aponi, the Learned Society of the Malohont, and Anton Augustín Baník were also included. Of the 409 fragments, 225 served as book covers. Parchment covers are rare in incunables. They are mainly used in the 16th and 17th centuries. Later they were again exceptional. The method of making the binding varies mainly according to whether the old print has stiff boards or not. The study has also revealed several bookbinders' workshops using the same fragments or blind-tooling. |
