Citation
Description In contemporary cultural history, one can observe a gradual shift of methodological priorities from general and unifying interpretations of older cultural historiography to empirically analytical and multi-layered interpretations of newer historiography. Carl Schnaase, one of the first art historians and cultural historians of the 19th century, considered in cultural history research a key relationship namely between history and art history. In this relationship, two basic forms of cultural history were constituted at the end of the 19th century, which the author calls socio-cultural (Jacob Burckhardt and the historical conception of cultural history) and imago-cultural (Aby M. Warburg and the art-historical conception of cultural history).
