Description Thin flexible self-supporting ceramics are new promising material structures exploitable in many applications because of their unique combination of physical and chemical properties, which can exceed the performance of polymers or glass materials. In following study, we used special ceramic barrier layer using unique properties of alumina and zirconia-based substrates. These layers are investigated as base dielectric barrier for surface dielectric barrier discharge with coplanar geometry. Special geometry of coplanar electrodes was deposited on the surface of investigated ceramic barrier layer. Oscilloscopic measurement was used to evaluate ignition voltage and power efficiency of plasma source for different ceramic materials used as flexible dielectric barrier and different distances of electrodes. A thermal camera was used to monitor plasma source surface temperature distribution and peak temperature of ceramic layer. Detection of reactive species generated in gas atmosphere used for plasma ignition as well as optical emission spectroscopy were measured to further the description of this novel dielectric barrier discharge.
