Description Substrate-assisted laser desorption single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SALD SP ICP MS) is an effective analytical technique for nanoparticles characterisation. This technique allows a quick determination of nanoparticles of a different composition up to 15 nm without any sample modification. By our present results, a typical transport efficiency of SALD SP ICP MS nanoparticles deposited on samples is around 50 % for UV lasers. Due to thermal decomposition of nanoparticles in an ablation cell and their subsequent dispersing in a carrying gas is difficult to achieve a higher transport efficiency at using common 213nm UV lasers. In our experiments, we used a commercial 213nm UV laser ablation system with 50ms washout ablation cell and a lab-made 2940 nm laser ablation system with a simple ablation cell. As samples, we used Au nanoparticles and NaYF4 upconversion nanoparticles deposited on a plastic substrate or a cancerous tissue. Single particle upconversion (UC) microscopy was chosen as a reference method for SALD SP ICP MS.
