Description The heart is a muscular hollow organ deposit behind the sternum, 1/3 of heart is to right of sternum, and 2/3 is to the left side. The apex faces left, slightly forwards and downwards. The heart is protected by the rib cage. The heart of an adult person weights between 230 and 340g. The weight of women heart ranges from 230g to 320g. In general, it is reported that male heart is of 0.45 % and female heart of 0.40% of total body weight. Weight of heart is also age dependent. After 60th year of age, the heart weight decreases of 10% or more. Another factor influencing heart weight is the volume of cardiac muscle mass which is changing according to extent and intensity of long-term physical activity.
