Description The article deals with the beginning of the Sokol gymnastic organization in Brno. It focuses on the demonstration of Czech emancipation in Brno, which was represented by Sokol gathering in 1914 and“remembrance gatherings” in 1924 and 1934. It mentions the visit of president Tomaš Garrigue Masaryk in Moravia, in the course of which he visited the Sokol stadium where the exercise of youths took place as a part of the remembrance gathering. The priority in the schedule of the president was given to Brno universities, we therefore mention this fact as well. The article analyses mass Sokol expeditions to Moravia organized by Czech Sokol community to support the idea of Czech nationality resulting in the organization of the gathering. The only general Sokol gathering taking place outside Prague, also called the Brno gathering, was the outcome of the efforts to strengthen the concept of nationality in Moravia. Brno, ethnically divided at that period, was the most suitable for such a manifestation, as the oldest Sokol unit was formed here. The article describes to current readers this regretfully neglected event of our modern history. Both“remembrance gatherings” were similarly neglected and our article seeks to right this wrong.
