Description Acid hydrolysis and photooxidation are the most often causes of decay of leather. In case of parchment research, some typical features of hydrolysis, oxidation and gelatinization were observed applying Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The ATR-FTIR technique using as a potential fast method for assessment of photooxidation and acid hydrolysis of vegetable tanned leathers is discussed. Determination of the type of decay is a crucial knowledge for the way of subsequent conservation, displaying and long-time storage
