Description Chalcogenides were studied since long time due to their important applications in photonics, ultrafast switching, ultra-high-density phase-change storage and memories, integrated fibre optics, biosensors, etc.[1]. Recently, we showed that LDI TOFMS is useful for the partial structure characterization [2-3]. However, the use of LDI TOFMS has some limitations because a fragmentation of basic structural entities forming the structure of the material may occur. In this work, LDI TOFMS afforded with quadrupole ion trap was used to study As2Ch3 (Ch = S, Se, and Te) bulk chalcogenide materials. The generated clusters are formed either due to fragmentation of the basic structural units or to some extent they can be created through the reactions of highly energetic species present in the plasma plume. LDI breaks the glass structure yielding fragments which can be considered as parts of the original structure. Therefore, we examined herewith the use of some “protective” polymers to reduce destruction process. The fragmentation of glasses was diminished using some polymers. This novel approach widens applicability of LDI MS, enables to get more complex insight into the structure of these materials and opens new possibilities of LDI TOFMS analysis for chalcogenides and also other laser sensitive materials.
