Description Sport performance of elite athletes is accompanied by long-term intensive training. Without adequate period of rest and recovery this intensive training can cause overreaching of young athlete. Stress, fatigue, lack of rest, sports-related injuries and load before and during competitions increase the risk of overtraining that leads to a decrease of performance, persistent fatigue, reduced ability to compete and mood disorders. The relationship between personality traits and sport performance can be understood in two different ways. Certain personality traits may contribute to achieve better performance of athletes. On the contrary sport career and lifestyle may contribute to a modification of elite athlete’s personality. Certain personality traits are more pronounced in elite athletes than in physically inactive population. Differences can be found even among athletes engaged in individual and team sports. The presented paper will be a theoretical definition of the problem, that is related to currently ongoing research titled “Psychological Aspects of Coping in elite Athletes in Adolescence”.
