Description Biofouling of surfaces is the main problem in facilities/devices operating with liquids or exposed to water, eg. cooling pipes, boat hulls, underwater constructions etc. The new possibilities for biofouling control are being investigated. The use of photocatalytic materials which counteract undesired organisms due to the formation of radicals is one of numerous options. The most used substance is photocatalytic TiO2. To create samples, TiO2 of different particle size was used, together with other surface coatings. The surface energy and photocatalytic efficacy (ISO 22197-1:2009 - NOx degradation) was measured. Samples were tested for biological efficacy against green alga Klebsormidium. Efficacy was evaluated by comparing the photographic images and by extracting chlorophyll of algae deposited on samples. It was found that the values of surface energy are not the only decisive, but there are also other surface parameters applied. Some samples were efficient for NOx degradation, but the same samples were not that efficient against algae, probably due to the spectral composition of the lights. Results of the extraction of chlorophyll did not correspond with the photographs. For assessment of additional samples, (semi)automatic image analysis will be investigated.
