Description The paper summarizes the results of research aimed at plasma-chemical pretreatment of six types of plastics (PP, ABS, PBT / ASA,PA, PC, PC / ABS) for two water-based paints (RAL 9010 BaseCoat and Acrylcol shine V2046-A-C1000-L2,5RAL 9010). RF plasma slit jet (120 mm width of the active area) was utilized for the pretreatment. Argon and argon in additions of O2 and N2 was used as a working gas. Surface ionization was selected as a reference technology. Surface energy measurements were carried out on the untreated, ionized and plasma treated plastics samples (dimensions 50x150 mm and 2.5-3 mm thickness). The adhesion between coating and substrate was evaluated according to DIN ENISO 4624 (673077). The experiment proved the assumption that for most plastics the plasma pretreatment is significantly more effective than ionization (in some cases by more than one order of magnitude). The main result of the complex experiment is to demonstrate that there is no direct correlation between the total surface free energy of plastic surface treated by various techniques, and the adhesion between coating and material.
