Description The present study discusses the role of the mother tongue and English in English as a foreign (EFL) classes. In the empirical research, 13 video-taped lessons taught by expert EFL teachers were analyzed to quantify the use of English and Czech. As the comparison with the results of a similar study shows, English was more dominant in the expert teachers’ lessons, yet Czech was also present in the classes. The outcomes display a considerable variation, which raises questions about the adequacy of the methods used. Alternative research procedures are suggested at the end of the study.
