Description | The paper focuses on cultural representations of distant places that circulate in the Czech society. Edward Said’s concept of imaginative geographies is used for this effort. For Said imaginative geographies are about production of place images. Images have their own meanings that shouldn’t be supposed as reflecting real complexity of places. Rather these meanings dramatize difference and reproduce the discourse of Otherness. The first part of the paper briefly introduces theory for using imaginative geographies as an analytical concept. The second part is an example of this analytical use. Imaginative geographies of China that appears in the Czech society are analyzed. The qualitative analysis is based on interviews with several members of the Czech society. It is shown how these imaginative geographies are discursively linked to Western “neoliberal hegemonic rationality”, which makes imaginative geographies helping to conceal structural problems of global capitalism. |
