Description | Besides growth hormone and IGF-1, human growth is influenced by other factors, among which influence of steroid hormones has been identified. In this pilot study, we observed the correlation between long-term state of levels of steroid hormones (testosterone, estradiol, and cortisol) and measurements of the human hand in 10 females and 11 males (aged from 20 to 30 years). A competitive enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was used to determine the hormone levels (expressed relatively to the levels of creatinine) from carefully standardized 24-hour urine collections. Hand measurements were taken from 2D scans of hands obtained using a desktop scanner. In these images, 33 landmarks were digitized and then 528 distances were calculated between all pairs of landmarks. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used as a measure of association between hand measurements and hormone levels. More correlations (R>0.50 or R<–0.5) were observed in males than in females. The weakest relationships were detected between measurements of hands and levels of estradiol. Most measurements correlated (also statistically significantly) with the levels of cortisol, and these correlations were negative – the higher long-term state of levels of cortisol, the smaller measurements of hand. Possible interpretations of these findings are discussed. |
