Description | A heroic worker determined to exceed production targets in the name of the 5-year plan and the whole national economy belongs to one of the most repeated icons of state socialism's visual imagery. This lecture explores the film promotion of work and building in the conditions of state socialism in the Czechoslovakia with the aim to reassess its existing explanation in the strict terms of replication of Soviet model. Focusing on the role played by media in cultivation the citizen's attitude to labour, my aim is to present the range of epistemic frameworks in which the concepts of labour awareness and labour ethics were rooted (concepts of the body, health, machine, nation, etc.), and demonstrate the ambivalence of capitalist and socialist agendas behind them. |
