Description | Pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis carinii (PCP ) is a life -threatening fungal infection that occurs especially in HIV -positive and other immunocompromised individuals. A specific group of patients consists of immunocompromised patients with hematologic malignancies , have been shown that the conventionally used methods , in particular microscopic analysis , are highly specific but not sensitive enough . In these patients, the method of choice detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii DNA in clinical samples (mostly in induced sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid ) methods based on PCR. The first method enabling the detection of P. jirovecii in clinical samples have been published in 90 the last century (1 ) and has since followed dozens of works that use different PCR platforms ( single-round , nested , semi -nested , real -time PCR) and were focused on different target genes. The aim of this review is to describe the advantages and pitfalls of PCR diagnosis of PCP in patients with hematologic malignancies. |
