Description Hairpins or hairpin-like structures consisting of a single-stranded loop region closed by a base-paired stem occur not only in single-stranded DNAs and RNAs but also in double-stranded DNAs. Hairpins as a basic unit of nucleic acid structure play a very important role in many biological processes, including the triplet repeat expansion associated with neurodegenerative diseases (fragile chromosome X syndrome, Huntington’s disease, myotonic dystrophy).
