Citation
Description The author focuses on the circumstances of the coming of the Knights Hospitaller to Bohemia and on the formation of the earliest administrative structures. The order’s house in Prague played a decisive role in this process. This house was established in 1169 by the royal chancellor Gervasius and his relative Martin, who became an eminent representative of the Hospitallers in the countries to the east of the Holy Roman Empire. The commandery of Prague gained properties in various parts of Bohemia. In some places, new commanderies were founded (Kadaň, Manětín). The nobility also established new houses in the course of the thirteenth century (Strakonice, Mladá Boleslav). In the fourteenth century, the Bohemian priory, separated from the German administrative unit of the order, was divided into four bailiwicks (Bohemia, Moravia, Austria, Silesia).
