Description | Calculation of reliability and availability is a necessary part of every fault tolerant system design. Conventional methods, which use calculus of probability, almost fail when there is dependant failure, repair, or standby operation in the system. Use of Markov models also almost breaks down when system is composed of many elements or system is repairable. However, the alternatives for reliability and availability, i.e., mean time to failure and steady state availability, respectively, are easily measurable using Markov graphs. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for the calculation of mean time to failure, and also develop a method to measure steady state availability with its corresponding algorithm. |
